Online Course Registration Procedure (Pre-evaluation) To register for an online course offered by the Math & Computer Science Department, you must complete each of the following steps in order . You must be fully successful at each and every step to register for an online class. This procedure was established to: (1) demonstrate your technical competency and motivation for online course work and (2) to demonstrate your potential success in taking an online course. The results of each item will be verified by a faculty member of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. Please Note: Before registering for any online class, you must have (1) an email address, (2) an Internet Service Provider (or access to an ISP) and (3) a web browser to complete this Pre-evaluation. If you do not have an email address AND an ISP/Web browser, you cannot register for an online class. Four Steps for the pre-evalution follow: Step 1 Step 1. Mathematics competency has been directly related to taking online course, especially in the Computer Science and Management Information Systems fields. Prior to registering, you must demonstrate a minimum level of mathematics competency. This can be accomplished in several ways: a. If you have taken MATH111 Intermediate Algebra or higher at WNMU (or have transferred with an equivalent course from another college/university, as transcripted in your academic file), send an email with your name and WNMU student id and highest level of mathematics course at WNMU or at another university (transcripts must be sent to WNMU) to the online course instructor for verification. Continue to step 2 below. - or - b. If you have an ACT Math Score of 21 or higher (or equivalent SAT score in math), send an email with your name and WNMU student id and ACT Math or SAT Math score to the online course instructor for verification. Continue to step 2 below. - or - c. Take the Math Placement test. Call the Student Advising Office to schedule and take this test. You must have a score that places you (at the minimum) at the level of College Algebra (MAT111, or higher) to register for the course. Once you have completed the Math placement test, send an email with your name and WNMU student id and your math score to the online course instructor for verification. Continue to step 2 below. Step 2 Step 2. This step requires you to (1) demonstrate that you have Microsoft Office on your computer (a requirement for online courses in the CS/MIS department) and (2) your ability to use email and send an attachment. Send a Word attachment that contains a brief note on the course number and description of the class that you wish to enroll in. Also be sure to include a brief introductory paragraph about why you want to take an online course (5 to 8 sentences) in the attached document. Spell check and format your document so that it is neat. Be sure to attach the document to an email message to the online course instructor. Be sure to include your name, email, contact phone number and the course/section of the class that you are interested in taking in the body of the email message too. This step will ensure that you properly know how to use email and send attachments. Once your email is received, the online instructor will reply back to you. If all is in order (as indicated by the online instructor's return message), continue to step 3. Step 3 Step 3. This step will demonstrate that you have the ability to access a web browser and log into WebCT (WebCT is the course management tool used for online courses at WNMU). Open up a browser on your computer and enter in the URL for the school: http://www.wnmu.edu/ . a. Locate WebCT on this page and click on it. b. Select the “Logon to myWebCT” link. Enter in the following login information on the WebCT screen.
Step 4 Step 4. Complete the registration paperwork for the online course. Take your registration form along with your printed email confirmation from step 3 to either (1) the course instructor for her/his signature OR (2) to Academic Advising for an advisors signature. This will complete the pre-evaluation and registration for the online course in the Math/CS Department. Please note, most online courses offered by the Mathematics and Computer Science department have a software requirement (the minimum is Microsoft Office containing Word, Powerpoint, and Excel). Check with your instructor for more detail on the required software for each online course that you will be taking. If you have any questions about any of the steps above, please contact the Mathematics and Computer Science Department or the online course instructor.
